Maria Emília Rosa was born in Mértola in 1957. She graduated in Metallurgical Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) in 1980 and holds a Ph.D. in Materials Engineering from IST (1990). She started her professorship activity at IST in 1980, being Associate Professor since 1993, currently in the Mechanical Engineering Department. She has carried out research work in several areas, namely plastic deformation of materials, structural and mechanical properties of cellular materials (cork), foams and liquid films. She has participated in several national and European projects on cork. In 1989, Emília Rosa received the Gulbenkian Science and Technology Award.
